School Newspaper Competition

Following the enormous success of last year’s competition, we are thrilled to announce that the First News School Newspaper of the Year competition is back and our team are ecstatic to see just what young editoral talent is out there! The standard of entries last year was exceptional, so this year’s judges are looking out for the best of the best!

For those unfamiliar with the First News School Newspaper of the Year competition, if your students regularly create their own school newspaper, or you have put together a newspaper recently as part of a journalism project with your class, then you can enter it into our competition to be with a chance of becoming First News’ School Newspaper of the Year 2013-14!

We know just how much work it takes to put together a newspaper – from researching news stories, to writing headlines and sourcing pictures – so we want to see what you’ve created and reward you for your brilliant efforts! This year, there are three categories for these awards, open to all schools where students have created their own newspaper, newsletter or web pages to report school news to their school community at any time from September 2013 to June 2014. These are:

1) Primary School Newspaper of the Year 2013 – 2014

2) Secondary School Newspaper of the Year 2013 – 2014

3) Special School Newspaper of the Year 2013 – 2014

Entries will be judged by a team of expert panelists, including children’s author Anthony Horowitz.

Anthony told First News: “I have been reading newspapers for as long as I can remember, reminding myself that I am not alone on this planet and that the good and bad things that happen to other people somehow affect me too.  I’m pleased to be supporting an award that encourages the reporting and the reading of news. I think it’s as important now as it ever has been.”

We are thrilled Anthony will be a part of this year’s competition and we know he is looking forward to reading each and every one of your school newspapers!
