Matilda The Musical – find out how the multi-award show is made!

Matilda The Musical is the perfect treat for students of all ages and is a fantastic introduction to theatre. It is particularly suitable for students of English, Drama & Theatre Studies and has strong curriculum links to Literacy, PSHE and SEAL.

The show has created a set of online resources, inspired by Matilda The Musical, to give schools insights into the process of staging this award-winning musical. As well as teacher notes full of ideas for how to prepare your students for seeing the production, it also offers a programme of work which aims to give young people the inspiration, confidence and skills to develop their own writing. This interactive site contains filmed interviews with the show’s creators, Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin, together with comprehensive teacher notes for use in the classroom. We hope you enjoy using it.

“I wanted to write and say how fabulous I think these resources are. The teacher’s notes are so detailed and easy to follow and the interactive website is brilliant. It has inspired me to use drama much more widely in Literacy and given me ideas of how to do this. I am so excited about delivering these lessons as I think the children will love them and it will hopefully motivate them further with their writing.”
Emma Sinclair, Primary School Teacher, Osmani Primary School, London.

The site also contains additional resources based on the artistic process of staging Matilda The Musical to help support KS2 and KS3 students in their own creative writing.

With specially filmed interviews and interactive resources students will see how writer Dennis Kelly and composer Tim Minchin set about adapting the novel for the stage.

Students can follow a similar creative journey and, by working through the site, they will be supported to create a scene or a song for a new character in the story of Matilda The Musical.

You will find web pages for each of the steps that are essential in the writing process:
